7 Ways to Minimise Your Carbon Footprint

When it comes to the environment, many of us are more aware of our impact now than we have ever been before. We know that often we may have made mistakes in the past, but with more focus on being eco-friendly and reducing our carbon footprint, what can we do to help? There are things you can do day to day and changes that you can make that will start to have an impact on the environment. It all adds up. So here are some of the things that you could do.

Upgrade your heating system and understand the thermostat

When was your heating last updated? Many of us will have homes that are using boilers and heating systems that are old and won’t be the most eco-friendly. Upgrading your heating system can be costly, but a worthwhile investment as not only will they be better for the planet but more efficient in your home when it comes to energy costs. Also, understand your thermostat. You don’t always need the high setting on and reducing the temperature by a few degrees can make a difference.

Insulate your home

Insulation is also key so it may be time to invest in insulating your home. This helps you to use less energy and heat in your home as it retains it. The more energy and heating we use, the more carbon emissions our homes are letting off.

Draught proof your home

Another way to minimise your carbon footprint and help your home reduce carbon emissions is to draught-proof it. New windows and doors can help with this but also make sure there are no other ways that heat might be escaping.

Use LED bulbs in your home

A modern LED bulb uses 80% less energy than a standard bulb, so maybe it is time to make that switch in your home. You can save on your energy bills by doing this, but it can also reduce carbon emissions by around 64kg a year. Which is a fair chunk when you think about it.

Have you got energy-efficient appliances?

When it comes to your home, it is all about trying to use less energy, and often old appliances use more than is needed. It might be time to upgrade things like the washing machine, dishwashers and even kettles and irons to ensure that you are using as little energy as possible.

Make different choices with how you travel

There is a lot to be said about how you travel and often that can be the biggest chunk of our overall carbon footprint. So it may be time to make changes. Cycling or walking to places will stop you from using the car or choosing public transport instead. You could also switch from a fuel-powered car to an electric vehicle.

Reduce, reuse and recycle

The more you reduce, reuse, and recycle, the more you will minimise your carbon footprint. Recycling especially can have a big impact, as well as trying to find alternative uses for things before getting rid of them for good. Donating to charities can help as well.

I hope these tips help you to minimise your carbon footprint.
